曾經說過，從前英國著名獨立廠牌4AD旗下的一眾重點樂團之中，我對Dead Can Dance的狂熱程度乃高於廣為樂迷熟悉的Cocteau Twins。而我相信對於不少西方樂手而言亦如是。
原籍澳洲墨爾本、繼而移居英倫發展的Dead Can Dance，樂隊發跡自當年的Gothic圈，隨著他們對中世紀音樂、中東音樂、歐洲古老民謠取經而建立起其別樹一幟的風格，對後世的Darkwave與Heavenly Voices體系有著深遠的影響。
他們的影響力，那有見於在過去七年間已共有三款Dead Can Dance的致敬專輯出現過。
最先一張是Cleopatra廠牌出版的The Carnival Within，有Ikon、The Last Dance、Ex-Voto、Jarboe & PBK等等隊伍參與；去年適逢DCD出道廿載，黑金屬廠牌Black Lotus亦為他們出版了一套雙張的The Lotus Eaters，除一眾Black Metal樂隊之外還有Ataraxia、Faith And The Muse、Black Tape For A Blue Girl、Arana等等單位。最新一張DCD的致敬專輯Summoning Of The Muse（取自其第三張專輯Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun內的一曲名字），則屬於「後4AD」廠牌的美國獨立公司Projekt出品。
時光倒流二十年，DCD在1985年發表了得以全然建立起其風格的第二張專輯Spleen And Ideal，並公認為樂隊的奠定性之作，唱片更曾攀上英國獨立榜的亞軍位置。
墮落天使
初邂逅DCD，是我對一眾黑暗派、死亡派地下音樂趨之若鶩的少年時代，無「死」不歡，早年對於我來說，DCD正是另一隊「死字頭」樂隊。那時他們教我深刻的，還有其充滿神秘感的唱片封面──Spleen And Ideal封面上倒塌中的建築物與前面站著身披紅袍、手拿著星形紙牌的神祕人所予人的不祥之感，抑或Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun封面上在樹蔭下披著白袍的石像營造出幽悒傷逝的氛圍，都是多年來在腦海裡驅不散的圖像。
隨著對他們有進一步的認識，才體驗到DCD的音樂精髓，是他們對遠古文化的探討與其文學本質；然後也得悉，原來Dead Can Dance之名字，是取自「墮落頹廢」(Decadence)的發音。
DCD的兩位主將Lisa Gerrard和Brendan Perry同是歌手，在二人大相徑庭的演繹方式下，形成了樂隊的雙重性格。如果說85年的Spleen And Ideal是給他倆建立起其強烈風格的指標性專輯，那麼兩年後在黑膠唱片上Brendan和Lisa各自擔綱主唱一面的Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun，正反映了二人各具異稟的音樂個性。
最重要是當年DCD的音樂已有其「品質保證」，每每印證了他們的成熟躍進。88年的Serpent's Egg是其淋漓盡至表現，90年的Aion那濃厚的文藝復興色彩與美不勝收是最叫人回味，到了93年的Into The Labyrinth已愈見無懈可擊。惟覺停滯不前，是96年的Spiritchaser，但也許連他們也有感到樂隊已到盡頭，所以DCD亦在同年宣佈解散。
為他們作薪火相傳，是後世的Darkwave及Heavenly Voices樂團。
薪火相傳
Summoning Of The Muse是Projekt廠牌出品，陣容上除了Black Tape For A BlueGirl、Arcana、Dark Sanctuary、Autumn's Grey Solace等自家旗下音樂單位外，也有一度合作過的Rajna，以及Faith & The Muse、Chandeen、Stoa知名等等隊伍。當中超過半數曲目是獨家作品，難得是曾參與過The Lotus Eaters的Arcana和Faith & The Muse也獻上全新的DCD改編曲目，反之Projekt旗下頭號樂團BTFABG的清雅脫俗、不吃人間煙火版Fortune Presents Gifts Not According To The Book(取自Aion專輯) ，卻在此「翻叮」。
比起之前的DCD致敬專輯，Summoning Of The Muse內的曲目乃有意保留DCD作品裡內含的Darkware/Heavenly Voices神髓。像Dark Sanctuary的Summoning Of The Muse幾乎是照板煮碗地重玩出來（只是末段加入了軍鼓演奏）。法國二人組合Rajna演繹Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun專輯的Cantara在鋪排與配器音色上也沒有多大改動，蠻原汁原味。瑞典中世紀樂團Arcana玩The Arcane這首來自85年經典EP著作Garden Of The Arcane Delights的曲目，忽然發覺此歌名跟其樂團名字竟是如斯形同近似，連Peter Bjargo也或多或少模仿了Brendan Perry的唱腔。
Christian Death家族分支歌德二人樂隊Faith & The Muse玩Serpent’s Egg的Chant Of The Paladin，其Chanting吟唱則更具祭禮氣息。Mirabilis玩同樣來自Serpent’s Egg時一曲The Writing On My Father’s Hand，卻換上那麼靜清幽的詮釋。91年精選專輯A Passage In Time內之鳥語花香新曲Bird，落在Kobe手上乃更強調其部落節奏。
而Autumns Grey Solace的夢幻悽迷Shoegazer版Musica Eternal(來自Dead Can Dance專輯)、Chandeen的純美Dream-Pop版In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated(來自Garden Of The Arcane Delights EP)、Stoa發思古幽情新古典版Cantara(來自Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun)，感覺頗見迥然不同且別出心裁，但仍可師承到相當的DCD音樂底蘊。
80年代晚期逐漸轉型，除了英倫本土樂團，廠牌也將觸角伸向美國東岸：Pixies、Throwing Muses與Belly等當時仍屬「地下音樂」的樂團接連被簽下。90年代初期更在洛杉磯設立辦公室，宣告百花齊放的另類音樂世代到來。雖然Pixies於1993年解散，卻無損樂團持續發酵的影響力，由Pixies與Throwing Muses成員所組的新團The Breeders更成為4AD的生力軍。Red House Painters與Air Miami等美國樂團持續壯大廠牌的聲勢，Mojave 3與Tindersticks等英格蘭隊伍也依舊是傷心人的最愛。
進入21世紀，4AD不但未被競爭激烈的市場淘汰，腳步反而越踏越穩，好團一個簽過一個：The National、Iron & Wine、Deerhunter、Bon Iver、Beirut、TV On The Radio與Blonde Redhead張張都是叫好叫座，一些剛出道的藝人或曲風小眾的團體如Gang Gang Dance、Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti、Twin Shadow、Department Of Eagles、St. Vincent與The Big Pink也在4AD的拉拔下享有不俗的成績。

Sonic Youth的悠遠生涯，從未被主流樂壇真正接納。當然了，他們也不在乎。正當同儕與後輩汲汲營營迷失於唱片工業撒下的商業巨網之際，他們近乎執拗的堅持，投射出的是一幅沒有灰階、只有飽滿原色的完整圖像。Sonic Youth之所能屹立不搖，不在於他們的孤高身影只能供人仰望，乃在於，他們不是抱著浮木順流而行的投機客，而是一群謹守創作核心，嚴循創造力（creativity）、原創性（originality）與誠信（integrity）的正港搖滾客。
Sonic Youth體現了如假包換的「酷」概念。代表著，做自己而不媚俗，擇善固執且從一而終。樂迷可從他們的音樂中聽出某種豐盈的氣場，某種置身事外的強韌自信。批評者云，綜觀Sonic Youth團史，所曾發行的數十張唱片（包含團員之個人創作），其中差異不可謂大。換言之，若將1982年的同名專輯與去年那張浸滿青春之泉的Rather Ripped放在一塊兒，似乎聽不見顯著進步，給人原封不動之感。那些粗礪聲響與迷散結構，不都屬同一套路？

2006年9月該唱片公司簽下了愛黛兒。並於2007年10月發行了她的第一張個人單曲〈Hometown Glory〉。愛黛兒在2006年時便曾擔綱 Jack Peñate 的開場表演。2007年底時她已至各處進行個人巡迴演出。2008年愛黛兒成為第一位獲得全英音樂獎評審團獎，該獎是特別頒給當時仍未發片的歌手。愛黛兒也是BBC票選之（2008好聲報到）的第一名。
